Getting to Sheffield
The closest airport to Sheffield is in Manchester. It is served by many domestic and international carriers and has a direct rail link to Sheffield taking about 1.5 hours.
Another option from France is to take the Eurostar to St Pancras. Again there are direct trains from St Pancras to Sheffield, taking around 2 hours.
Directions from Sheffield Train Station
Within the train station (past platform 8, towards the rear) there is a tram stop. Board the ‘Blue Route’ tram and alight at the ‘University of Sheffield’ tram stop, after about 10 minutes. This is the most convenient way to get to University.
Leave the railway station and go diagonally right towards the bus station. The 120 and 95 buses stop near the University.
Walking takes about 25 minutes and passes through the town centre. The simplest route is probably to go past Sheffield Hallam, up Surrey Street, across Barker’s Pool and along Division Street.
Most speakers will be staying at the Rutland Hotel , about a 10 minute walk from the Hicks building.
Funded PhD students will be staying at the Ibis Hotel , Sheffield City. The hotel is a 20 minute walk, or a 10 minute tram ride away from the Hicks Building.Other options:
If you would like to book somewhere different, here are several options: The Harley ; more or less on the doorstep of the Hicks Building and also quite cheap. Be warned: the Harley is also a live music venue.
The Wilson Carlile Centre ; approximately 10 minutes away from the Hicks building and also reasonably priced.
A bit further away, in the city centre:
Jury's Inn : 4 star hotel 10 minute walk from the train station, 20 minute walk to Hicks building.
Hampton Inn : 3 star hotel, ca 20 minute walk to the Hicks building.
